Sorry Bambi, this babe smells nothing like Flowers

I've got to be completely honest with you, I've never really hated skunks until this weekend. In fact, I always thought they were kind of cute. And besides that awful odor you smell from time to time, I've never had a person run-in with a skunk.

Sunday night Nick and I came home and our house smelled like someone had chopped up 1,000 onions and cooked them up with 500 cloves of garlic. It was disgusting and we had no idea what the smell was from. We sniffed around for awhile while I had the most hilarious thoughts pass through my mind about how this had happened. Finally I was too tired to care so I sat on the couch for a minute. My pup, Summer, came over to say hello to me and in that moment I realized what had happened while we were gone. Not one but BOTH of our dogs had been sprayed by a skunk. The worst part was that afterward, they had free reign on our house because we have a doggy door. All of this is happening and Nick and I are gone. I’m dying as I write this, just picturing what happened to both of them after they got sprayed by the skunk. I’m imagining them running straight for the house (their safe place) and rubbing their faces all over our rugs and couches to get the burning “skunk juice” out of their eyes. (I can laugh about this now because our house and dogs are cleaned up.)

Onto our life-hack: You probably won’t need it this week, maybe not even this year and I hope never but I’m telling you, if this happens to you, you will think of Nick and I and you will search for this blog post.

What you need: 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup of baking soda, and 1 tsp of laundry detergent of dish soap.

What you do: Mix all of these things together in an open container and start scrubbing (don't use a closed container like a spray bottle or it will explode).

For your dogs: Put the mix straight on. Don’t wet them down first and let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse. Follow this with a normal bath with normal dog shampoo. We also used dog skunk removal shampoo. BE CAREFUL OF THEIR EYES.

For your house: Open all of your windows, turn on all your fans (we turned on our attic fan too), and start sniffing to see if the “skunk juice” is on anything specific. If you find a place, scrub it with the mix. I also deep cleaned our entire house (which probably needed it anyway but it definitely helped with the smell). Let it air out for at least 24 hours. Light some candles, spray some air freshener and pray that it goes away :).
